Security films for windows can be very effective and aesthetically pleasing when installed correctly but if you do not know what you are doing, it can be easy to make mistakes that affect either the performance or the appearance of the film in question, or both. Although we always recommend having film installed by experienced professionals, for those of you who would like to try it for yourselves we have compiled a list of the most commonly made mistakes in the hope that being forewarned you will not make them. Safety & Security Films: Common Installation Mistakes If you are keen to try installing your own security film, first take a look at this list of mistakes people often make so that you can avoid them.
- Failing to Clean Windows Properly – Before you apply safety & security films to your windows, you must make sure they are spotless. If they are not, the end result will be unsightly windows that cannot be cleaned properly unless the film is removed. Furthermore, the film may not adhere to the glass as well as it should, which will of course reduce its effectiveness.
- Using Rubbing Alcohol or Other Chemicals to Clean Windows – Professional installers only ever use warm water and a mild liquid soap when cleaning windows prior to applying security film and there is a very good reason for this. Although chemicals such as rubbing alcohol may appear to make the job of cleaning glass much easier, all chemicals leave a reside on the surface they are used to clean and this can interfere with the film’s ability to adhere to the glass. In severe cases, the film will actually start to peel off after a short time, rendering it effectively useless.
- Failing to Remove All Water and Air Bubbles – Security film is applied to wet windows and once the film is in position, a squeegee must be used to push excess water and any air bubbles that may be present out from under the film. If this task is not performed properly, once again you will be left with unattractive blisters or bubbles on your windows and the film is unlikely to adhere as well as it needs to.
